Reform The Uniform™ believes TOGETHER, all parties concerned must come TOGETHER for productive change. Reform The Uniform™ believes NOW is the time to implement policies and procedures that treat ALL people as equal under law: NO EXCEPTIONS!
It’s the 21st century and we are still saying ‘things gotta change’.
Abolishing police or majorly defunding law enforcement agencies is NOT the answer. These words put police, politicians, others and even us on the defense. Defund the police is a distraction and a missed opportunity for change.
Reform The Uniform™ wants to see the police and their communities work together to implement positive change. Reform The Uniform™ believes it is time to look at AND change not only policing agencies, but all institutions (legal, politics, finance, education, military, realty, etc.) that have enjoyed ‘privileges’ of exclusivity. The gatekeepers of these institutions have written the rules, and interpreted their own writings so they apply to everyone else but themselves.
Policing as we know it today goes back to @1838, according to TIME (Waxman, 2017). “The idea that police are a constituted body of persons empowered by a state, with the aim to enforce the law, to ensure the safety, health and possessions of citizens, and to prevent crime and civil disorder” did not include anyone other than white, male, property owners. Police were even used to capture ‘run-away slaves’ and ‘freed’ black people.
Full steam ahead to the 20th century, Waxman, (2017) cites crime historian Samuel Walker’s The Police in America: An Introduction. Walker points out the transition of police officers into a profession was not completely productive. This evolution promoted the creation of police departments that were ‘inward-looking’ and ‘isolated from the public.’ Additionally, police used/use crime-control tactics that exacerbate tensions between themselves and the communities they swore to “serve and protect.”
Reform The Uniform™ believes that with full involvement and commitment, America needs to take action. Words, outrage and protests have all led to very little action. Momentary excitement and emotional committees have produced very little longterm or permanent progress.
Reform The Uniform™ believes together WE all have to roll up our sleeves, combine our energies, talk in plain words and make substantive changes NOW!
Acknowledge there is institutional and systemic racism in all areas of law enforcement agencies.
Acknowledge that black and brown people are subjected to higher rates of disparity from law enforcement agencies.
Create a national law enforcement tracking system. Bad 'actors' cannot continue to go from state to state with no record attached.
Incorporate community policing policies that are representative of the community in which they serve.
The Federal Government must modify the maximums and limitations of Qualified Immunity. Providing protections for uncorrupted law enforcement officers while allowing prosecution for those who irresponsibly violates another's rights.
Create an environment for ‘good’ law enforcement agents to be able to report ‘bad agents’.
Demilitarize all policing agencies.
